APOSTOLIC JOURNEY OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI TO MÜNCHEN, ALTÖTTING AND REGENSBURG (SEPTEMBER 9-14, 2006)
MEETING WITH THE REPRESENTATIVES OF SCIENCE
LECTURE OF THE HOLY FATHER

Aula Magna of the University of Regensburg Tuesday, 12 September 2006

Faith, Reason and the University Memories and Reflections
Your Eminences, Your Magnificences, Your Excellencies, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is a moving experience for me to be back again in the university and to be able once again to give a lecture at this podium. I think back to those years when, after a pleasant period at the Freisinger Hochschule, I began teaching at the University of Bonn.

That was in 1959, in the days of the old university made up of ordinary professors. The various chairs had neither assistants nor secretaries, but in recompense there was much direct contact with students and in particular among the professors themselves. We would meet before and after lessons in the rooms of the teaching staff. There was a lively exchange with historians, philosophers, philologists and, naturally, between the two theological faculties. Once a semester there was a dies academicus, when professors from every faculty appeared before the students of the entire university, making possible a genuine experience of universitas – something that you too, Magnificent Rector, just mentioned – the experience, in other words, of the fact that despite our specializations which at times make it difficult to communicate with each other, we made up a whole, working in everything on the basis of a single rationality with its various aspects and sharing responsibility for the right use of reason – this reality became a lived experience. The university was also very proud of its two theological faculties (more…)

Ucapan Teresa Kok Dalam Perbahasan Usul 18 (1) Yang Dibawa Oleh YB Daripada Kubang Kerian Mengenai Kenyataan Yang Dibuat Oleh Pope Benedict

Ucapan YB Teresa Kok, Ahli Parlimen Seputeh Dalam Perbahasan Usul 18 (1) Yang Dibawa Oleh YB Daripada Kubang Kerian Mengenai Kenyataan Yang Dibuat Oleh Pope Benedict XVI Pada 16 September 2006

It was clear that, by inquiring about the reasonableness of faith, they too carried out a work which is necessarily part of the “whole” of the universitas scientiarum, even if not everyone could share the faith which theologians seek to correlate with reason as a whole (more…)

The Pope’s Speech: Lending Islam A Helping Hand To Avoid A Downward Spiral

15 September, 2006
by Samir Khalil Samir, sj
http://www.asianews.it/view.php?l=en&art=7224

Muslim criticism against the Pope’s remarks is mounting, but no one has actually read the whole speech. Benedict XVI criticises violence and proposes a reasonable alternative that could lead to a new Golden Age.

Beirut (AsiaNews) – Negative reactions in the Arab and Muslim world to the remarks made by Benedict XVI at Regensburg University are exaggerated and misplaced. Protest marches are being organised everywhere in ways that bring to mind what happened in the wake of the publication of the blasphemous Muhammad cartoons. But one thing is clear. No one, and I mean NO ONE, has fully read what the Pope said.

An English translation of the speech, which was in German, was released yesterday, a French version is not yet ready, and no translation has been made in any Eastern language (more…)

Open Letter: Reaffirming the supremacy of the Federal Constitution

To: The Malaysian Government
We, the undersigned, Malaysian men and women from all ethnic and faith backgrounds, are concerned about recent events and statements that undermine the supremacy of the Federal Constitution.

We wish to remind our national leaders that Article 4(1) emphatically declares that the Constitution is the supreme law of the Federation and that the oath of office of all parliamentarians, cabinet ministers and judges is singularly to defend the Constitution.

Further, Article 3(1) of the Federal Constitution states that ‘Islam is the religion of the Federation; but other religions may be practised in peace and harmony in any part of the Federation’. The Federation of Malaya Constitutional Commission, 1956-57 Report, states that this Article ‘shall not imply that the State is not a secular State’. The Supreme Court decision in Che Omar Che Soh (1988) reaffirmed that “the law in this country is still what it is today, secular law”.

Yet, increasingly we hear claims that Malaysia is an Islamic state.

Nazri brands me ‘Islam hater’

Tuesday, 28-03-2006

Malaysiakini, March 27: A minister today branded opposition parliamentarian Teresa Kok (DAP-Seputeh) an ‘Islam hater’ after she questioned the directive that all policewomen must wear the tudung (headscarf) during official parades.

During the question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat this morning, Kok in a supplementary question had described last week’s directive issued by Inspector-General of Police Mohd Bakri Omar as a “clear example” of human rights violation.

Responding, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz said the directive was to ensure uniformity of dress at official parades and this was even implemented during the opening of the Parliament session every year. (more…)

Sense & sensitivity

Wednesday, 15-02-2006

Last week, I wrote an article for my usual Sunday column in Sin Chew. Unfortunately my article was spiked because I touched on “sensitive ground” because I briefly mentioned the controversy surrounding the publication of the caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad in the Danish paper, Jyllands– Posten.

Before I wrote, I considered the sensitivity of the topic and then wrote it in a very careful manner. I put “sensitivity” as the topic of my article, but yet, the editor still killed the column.

In the article, I pointed out three incidents that happened during Chinese New Year and drew a conclusion that the people involved in them were “insensitive”. (more…)

Deepa Raya

Friday, 11-11-2005

I stopped blogging for about ten days, mainly because I do not usually give many speeches or make many statements when Parliament is not in session.

When Parliament is not sitting, I spend a lot of time handling constituency service. One of my assistant has left, and the new replacement, Mei Yee, is inexperienced and I needed to guide her through hands-on. As such I am personally handling many of the complaints.

A reader emailed me last week and asked me why my article in Sin Chew is so short. He suspected that the editor “chopped off” some parts of my original article.

This reader is correct. I wrote about some people, especially Muslims, who were not happy about the term “Deepa-Raya”. (more…)
