Jarmaluddin Jarjis Did Not Give A Satisfactory Reply To My Series of Questions On “Why The Saladin Project Took 6 Years To Produce A 6- Minute Trailer?”

I am not satisfied with the reply given by YB Dato’ Seri Jamaluddin Jarjis, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation on my queries over why it took 6 years for Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) to produce a 6- minute trailer ?

Jamaluddin Jarjis gave me a short reply due to the limitation of time in the Dewan Rakyat, and he said the trailer of Saladin only costs RM400,000 only and not RM20 million as pointed by me (more…)

International Women’s Day Message

Days away from the start of the 9th Malaysia Plan, aspects of the previous Plans, presented with much fanfare years ago, are still gathering dust in the government file cabinets.

Increasing the female labour force is one of the proposals outlined in the 6th Malaysia Plan (1991-1995). Malaysia’s female participation in the workforce has been hovering around 45 percent over the past two decades.

In 1985, female labour participation in Malaysia was 44.3 percent, up a shade higher at 46 percent in 2005.

This is much lower than most industrial countries, such as Singapore (56 percent), South Korea (51 percent) and United States (57 percent). (more…)

Follow Squatgate Commission’s recommendation

I welcome the statement made by the Royal Commission head, Mohamed Dzaiddin Abdullah, that the Commission has recommended that nude squats be done away with and the Standard Operating Procedure of the PDRM be amended through legislation.

In the UK and many other countries that respect human rights where body searches are routinely conducted as a matter of course, they are carried out in strict adherence to procedures that are already entrenched and incorporated in the respective statutory legislations, and example being the Police & Criminal Evidence Act in the UK. Senators Should Be Allowed to Vote According to Conscience

I feel a bit disturbed to read about the response of Nazri towards 16 women senators who want to oppose to the Islamic Family Law (FT)(Amendment) Bill 2005, where he said he has directed the women senators to pass the bill in the senate, which means they cannot use the Senate to force the bill to be retracted.

I have issued a statement today on this matter to urge the government to allow senators to vote on the bill according to their conscience. (more…)

Parliamentary Roundtable on Squatgate Scandal

The parliamentary opposition leader will be convening a Parliamentary Roundtable on Police Squatgate Scandal on police respect for the dignity and human rights of detainees in custody, which can serve as reference to the Dzaiddin Commission of Inquiry in preparing its report after its four days of public hearing.

It is open to all political parties, human rights organizations (including Suhakam), women organizations, NGOs and Malaysians concerned about police abuses and human rights violations of detainees in custody.

In view of the shortness of time, this announcement will serve as an open invitation to all to the Parliamentary Roundtable.

On October 4th, 2005, Tuesday, at about 12.30 mid night, I was driving my car. My friend Ghasem Pourmanaf was sitting next to me in the car. When I was driving along Jalan Raja Laut near to Kentucky Fried Chicken Restaurant, I was stopped by a police car. There were two police officers inside the police car. One fat Malay policeman came to me and asked for my passport, my friend Ghasem and I came out of the car and I told the policeman that my passport was left at home. (more…)
