Petition to Set Up IPCMC

Tuesday, 11-04-2006

Dear friends,

Please support the petition to establish Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) & movement towards a better police force.

http://www.petitiononline.com/betterpf/
To: The Malaysian Government
I/We the undersigned:

1. Commend and support the Prime Minister for having, in the past two years, set up two Commissions of Inquiry to look into matters concerning the Police; illustrating the Government’s concern for a better society, greater openness to views and criticisms, and the willingness to have a more open and honest appraisal of our institutions.

2. Urge that the above trend be continued, and the pace of reform be hastened.

3. Commend the chairman and the commissioners of these 2 Commissions for the sound and useful recommendations that they have put forward.

4. Believe that the recommendations of the Police Commission are comprehensive and balanced; as they do not merely focus on the conduct of the police, but also address problems faced by the police force, their terms of service, as well as issues such as human rights, crime, and corruption.

5. Believe that full regard must be had to the recommendations of the 2 Commissions, set up in the public interest and using public funds, which recommendations have been made after extensive fact-finding and research, and which recommendations will ensure best practices by the police force.

6. Believe that it is imperative that our nation immediately implements all the major recommendations of the 2 Commissions, including, in particular, the setting up of an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

  1. This IPCMC will not be set up as an ombudsman will be set up as an excuse that IPCMC is not necessary and unfair.

I bet the ombudsman idea will be dismissed after a while and the whole issue would be swept under the carpet as by then, there will be another issue to hijack the public attention.

    Remember?
    1) PAS and UMNO suppose to go ona debate then the “suqiu” thing was brought up
    2) the AP thing was hotting up then when squat gate came up, the attention was re-focused
    3) when the heat is too much on PDRM, “Teresa is a racist/islam hater/whatever whatever whatever”

so now, let’s see if history repeats, itself. Am I going to lost my $$$ on a bet that neither of the proposed body will not be set up?

  2. I strongly agree with lwt, his analysis on the setting up of IPCMC and ombudsman will be quite true.
The evident story of building scenic bridge, then stop, then negotiate, then start work, then stop, then we compensate the contractor.
Please can somebody find out who own the Gerbang Perdana co.?
Please search their qualifications and relevant experiences in handling this giant project.
Not very hard to find out why and how quick they can decide to compensate the contractor 100 millions as quoted by the newspaper.
    Very Strange!
    What can opposition parties do?
Your representation is too insignificant to be worried about!
‘Fires’ are everywhere, you can not fight fires here and there, running around with you’r hoses, you doze a little here, you find that there are fires’ in others places as well.
Only way is to focus on one issue, keep pressing hard on one particular hot topic, strike it while it is still hot.
If you quench it too early, nothing can be formed.
IPCMC, ombudsman, and any new agencies or not, if the same attitudes we all will have, no amount of new ideas will bear any fruits.

  3. Look at the PM statement today. I think the IPCMC is dead. What people don’t get is that IPCMC is a major reform and this PM is just not up to it. He don’t have what it takes to push it through. What he don’t get is that the opposition is going to hit him later linking IPCMC to the bridge – cakap tak sama bikin.
