Chinese New Year bliss

I have had a few extraordinary peaceful and quiet days on the first three days of the Chinese New Year.

During that time, I refrained from doing anything that would make me work, and I avoided going into the office and I refrained from checking emails too.

I tried to spend those three days with family and rested. It’s my Chinese sabbath.

I watched TV and movies, I visited friends, I attended two open-houses by Chinese associations, I played with my niece, I swam, I slept as much as I could, I tried to reply to all the CNY sms-es that have been sent to my mobile phone :-)

Oh, life was sweet, beautiful and I was walking on cloud nine.

I also managed to watch two movies, i.e Memoir of Geisha and The Fearless. I liked the Geisha very much. It’s a very good movie and the trio of leading Chinese actresses gave first class performances.

On the fourth day of CNY I started to move out of my “comfort zone”.

I spent half a day leading the lion dance team to visit supporters and members. This is my usual activity almost every Chinese New Year. We made alot of noise, shared a lot of laughter and we had a jolly good time bringing cheers and joy to the neighbourhoods we visit.

I shared expenses and profits with the lion dance team from Balakong/Cheras and I channelled all the proceeds from the lion dance performances to my service centre. The expenditure of my service centre comes to about RM7,000 to RM8,000 a month. Are there any readers out there who could spare a dime? :-)

Doing lion dance performance for hawkers in market, business people at their shops and homes bring happiness to many of them during CNY. Many people are happy to see me visiting them with the lion dance performance.

The busiest day for the lion dance team during CNY was the eighth day. This year, the eighth day was on Sunday and my team performed from 8am to 2am the next morning.

We received quite a lot of angpow that day. Unfortunately the leader of the lion dance team and two members fell sick after that.

Well, there is a price to pay when you work too hard to earn money :-)

  1. Nice post, this one.

Glad you had a relaxing holiday and let my imagination flow…..after watching Jet Li in Fearless, remembering the Wong Fei Hung character he played, Teresa Kok donned the lion dance gear and soared into the air with the obnoxious gong banging in the background….wow, some Chinese New Year we are having….come think of it, there were about 10 Wong Fei Hungs playing mahjong or something….

Donation to your service centre? u got my email address. Gimme the banking details and I’ll give u an angpow in cheque or bank in then.

  2. Enjoy yourself, everyone.

I stopped posting in the internet from the eve of CNY until now… My hiatus in the cyberspace will continue after today until this Sunday, the 15th of the Chinese calendar which marks the end of CNY celebration.

    Cheers!

  4. Hi YB,

I must say your “qi pao” or cheongsum that you were wearing looked very nice indeed. You looked radiant, alive and very much in CNY mode!
