What did Deputy OCPD actually say?

Friday, 25-11-2005

Sin Chew reported today that the deputy OCPD of PJ police station admitted that the policewoman in the MMS clip is their officer, whereas the TV3 news last night (mid night) reported that the OCPD of PJ police station denied that the lady is their officer. Who is correct here?

I just glanced through the headline story of Chinese night papers. Deputy IGP Musa Hassan said that it is normal procedure for police officers to ask detainees to strip and do ear-squat. It is to check whether the detainees consist of any drugs or not.

I then called the former police officer-turned lawyer Sankara Nair for a legal opinion and he said there is no such provision in the Inspector General’s Standing Order (IGSO).

I can only assume the police are feeling very embarrass now and they are looking for excuses to justify an unlawful act.

  1. i actually believe that the deputy OCPD is telling the truth when he claims that it IS standard procedure for detainees to be stripped naked and forced to perform ear-squats. That’s pretty frightening. outrage and consternation notwithstanding, ear-squats seem to me to be a rather primitive and vulgar way of determining the possession of any illicit substance on the person or in any bodily orifice. anyway, if it is standard procedure, i can’t imagine that it’s a legal one. can civil rights groups mount a class action lawsuit against the police on this matter?

  2. It is not the first time I hear these actrocities againts detainees in the police cell. During the reformasi era, we have heard the same happened to Malay muslim ladies. It is not about religion, it is the lack of professionalism and the greed to power and materialistic mind not forgetting immoral officers. Some are not fit to wear the PDRM badges as they practices corruption in their day to day line of duty. WHat does it got to do with immigration laws for an Indonesian overstayers harrass in their wallets everytime the police stop them in the roadside ???? Where will the future be. Keep it up Teresa, we support you, its long overdue someone do something about these matters. Thanks to the era of Mahathir, where judiciary and enforcement has deteriorated into such a low status.

  3. In Bolehland, anything is possible. I’m not surprised that this sort of thing could have happened. Have you heard about packets of Nasi Kandar being ‘sold’ for RM10 - RM15 in the lock-ups? Maybe the Domestics Affairs Minister should look into this matter as these ‘unscrupulous’ officers are overcharging the unwilling ‘customers’.

  6. This is a despicable act of the worst kind. There may be reasons to do a body search to detect drugs hidden in some unmentionable body orifice but it must be carried out in a discreet manner, in a closed room. Even though she may be a suspect she is still a fellow human being and her modesty and privacy must be respected. Just like the policewomen would demand her privacy and modesty not be violated. The fact that this is deliberately carried out in open and in full view of another male (reciting verses of Koran) voyeur just goes to indicate that theobjective is to humiliate the poor helpless lady. Yes, she may be aware that she is being filmed but that does not give rise to suspect that the punishment was being acted out. What do you expect her to do in such a situation when she was intimidated, put under extreme fear and duress? She just wanted to do the 10 squats and finish the whole thing. Just look at her face when she turned around. It was a face of being terrified, helplessness and her eyes were red. Is this a picture of someone voluntarily posing for the camera just to conjure up a tale against police brutality? It stinks to high sky and a mockery that the police force is being accorded the DiRaja status. What a shame and a laughing stock. This designation must be stripped off immediately before any more damage is done. We condemned the women being raped by soldiers in Korsovof. At least some of those victims died in dignity. But what about this poor lady? She will have to live for the rest of her life with this humiliation stalking her. God bless this poor lady.

  9. I am completely disgusted with the inhumane, high handed manner of those police personels who were involved not only in those cases reported by the chinese nationals, the video clips but also those undisclosed and unreported ones. Their actions brought disgraced to the nation as a whole and the police in particular. They are worse than the US army who tortured the detainees in the sense that they were at war whereas our police are entrusted with the upholding of law and order yet they breached the laws and the disregarded the procedure and took the law into their own hands. I dont agree with the statement by the police that they would investigate who took the pictures as this was not the issue unless and until there is a breach of national security by passing off sensitive information to the outsiders whereas in this case it is the exposure of their dirty tactic and the originator should be commendable for his or her action in exposing the naked truth which otherwise the general public would not be able to view the documentary proof if the same were proved to be true .

  10. This issue has spread to the UK. The BBC has even cited Jeff Ooi’s blog, to draw a parallel with the Abu Ghraib scandal.

  11. I have one more thing to add. The DAP politicians such as Teresa, Kit Siang and Fong Poh Kuan have all been very vocal these days. I think they’re becoming stars in the political arena already.
