Morning raid on Chinese nationals’ homes

Wednesday, 23-11-2005

The police has retaliated against the four women from China who lodged reports against the wrong-doings and corruption of police by conducting spot-checks on their private lives. Early this morning, about 7-8 uniformed policemen went to houses of the four Chinese nationals.

According to Yu Xuzhen, the first of the four to lodged complaints to police HQ and ACA, police pressed the bell of her house at about 2am while she was asleep.

When she refused to come out of the house, the police shouted her name outside the door and woke up the neighbours in her condo.

After that, the police called the mobile phone of her husband to check whether her husband was with her at home. In the end she has to wake up her husband to open the door to meet with the police.

It is obvious that the police are trying to harass these brave women who lodged complaints about their wrong-doings. The police are trying to dig into the women’s private lives to expose them to public, to show to public that these women are not “clean”. That’s why they check them at midnight. It is also a form of threat, an attempt to let them know their private lives are under scrutiny of police now.

It is very sad to see the police behave in such an unprofessional manner. This Chinese nationals’ case is no more a domestic issue but an international case, as this case has been widely publicised in the media in Singapore, Hong Kong and a few major newspapers in China.

The people in Malaysia and China are waiting for the investigation of police. The China media calls me almost everyday to find out what is latest and what’s the status of the police investigation.

The police still did not release info on the investigation report but instead they start interfering into the private sphere of these complainants.

This is totally in contrary to the statement of the IGP and PM who have said they wanted to wipe out corruption in the police force.

It has also discouraged members of public to come forward to lodge report against the wrong doings of police, not to mention foreigners who are always under the extortion of police.

I have written a letter to PM yesterday and cc-ed to Deputy Minister of Internal Security Dato’ Noh Omar.

Dato’ Nazri, Minister of PM’s Department has agreed to hand-deliver my letter to both of them and he promised to bring up this matter in the Cabinet meeting today.

My letter to PM is in my previous post.

  1. maybe i’m being a little unrealistic or naive here but why don’t victims of police harrassment ever take down the names and badge numbers of the pigs in order to facilitate the complaints process afterwards?

  2. this is the other thing that i’m curious about: is one legally obliged to pay any heed to a buncha pigs which turn up outside our homes, grunting and squeeling, looking to be fed and causing a general ruckus without any good reason, much less a warrant? do we have to even talk to them much less open our doors? are there any legal repercussions if we refuse to cooperate or even acknowledge their presence? if not, i figure they’ll just get tired of their antics and realise that they’re only embarrassing themselves and leave when their snouts get hoarse.

  3. I suppose that if we asks police officers for their names and badge numbers, we would be told off.

  4. Oh good cops, where art thou?

There is only so much one person can do. How many letters can you write to the Editors? How many blog posts on can you publish to convince the public on the importance of an issue?

  5. I am not amused by the Deputy Home Minister Datuk Tan Chai Ho reportedly saying in the Dewan Rakyat that “19,614 or 1.13% of the 1.74 million foreign workers in the country ran away from their employers from January to September” and that “The number is very small and not critical” (19,000 runaway workers, The Sun Wednesday November 16, 2005).

In fact, I am flabbergasted, absolutely dumbfounded, by the nonchalant air of indifference echoed in the statement by man second in rank charged with the responsibility of maintaining the sanctity of our borders.

I have written to various local media time and again over the last two years to sound my concern that immigrant workers who disappear into the unbounded freedom of our country must inevitably pose a threat to our national security.

We have 19,614 that are gone on the loose in the first three quarters of this year alone. The Human Resources Minister had, in May 2004, been quoted as acknowledging that 57,000 maids ran away from their employers in the last four years (The Star, 20th May 2004, page 12).

Forget about all the others which are not included in these statistics. These two admitted figures alone would make for about 78,000 illegal immigrants in our country.

78,000 is by no means a small number, even it if represents only about 0.3% (or 3 in 1000) of our national population. 78,000 is much more than the size of many of our electoral constituencies.

78,000 is a very sizeable proportion when compared against the size of the Royal Malaysian Police force. Against our Armed Forced. Even against the two forces combined.

78,000 is 4.5% of the total number of foreign workers in the country. And am I to be made to agree with the politically correct interpretation that four and a half in every 100 foreigner who crossed our frontiers legally are now illegal immigrants?

78,000 is not part of the figures of those who entered the country without crossing our immigration posts.

Mr Deputy Home Minister, for the sake of the peace and security of Malaysia, I am begging you to flash the red card at yourself. Take a break from politics. Sit on the other side of the barriers. Take a view of the playing field from the perspective of us ordinary and peace loving and law abiding Malaysians.

It need not be explained how illegal residents pose a threat on our socio-economic infrastructure. They makes a mess of the statistics of our demographics. They impinge on the peace of minds of citizens and legal visitors. They stress the public health care system. They demean national unity programmes. They mock efforts in our housing policies. They throw our public transportation system into disarray. They provide the manpower for a lot of crimes, petty and violent crimes alike. They threaten to rape, maim, kill YOUR loved ones. And much more…

We do not want illegal residents in our country, irrespective of their origin. We want more than lip service. We want more than police reports. We want more than cancellation of work permits. We want more than pecuniary penalties against traumatised, victimised, employers.

We want investigations into each and every case of runaway foreign worker. We want to know that there are no traitors profiteering from selling the security our country.

Most of all, we want a Home Ministry which shows urgency, a Home Ministry which speaks with reponsibility, a Home Ministry which acts with authority, a Home Ministry which can visualise threats to our national security, a Home Ministry which will not accept even one runaway foreign worker.

P.S. – you go work out 78,000 + 50,000 = 128,000, i.e. what is the percentage of our population is made up of illegals (considering only the published figures).
